Core Web Vitals: What Actually Moves the Needle

Core Web Vitals are Google’s measurements of real-world loading, responsiveness and visual stability. They influence rankings and, more importantly, user experience.

The three metrics

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content appears. Aim for 2.5 seconds or less
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the layout jumps while loading

Biggest LCP wins

Optimise the hero image (right size, modern format, preloaded), use fast hosting and caching, and remove render-blocking scripts and preloaders.

Improving INP

Reduce heavy JavaScript, defer third-party scripts and avoid long tasks on page load.

Fixing CLS

Set width and height on images, reserve space for embeds and ads, and avoid inserting banners above content.
